Botany Bouncers

On Monday 10 August, our Botany Bouncers Basketball Team played a fast-paced, exciting game against Mt Richmond School. The skills and sportsmanship shown by the team was outstanding and we were very proud of each one of them. A huge thank you to our supporters who cheered us on!

Netball

During the first week of the July school holidays Wiremu Taka 12D9 represented New Zealand in the U17 Men’s International Netball Tournament vs Australia. Hosted in Te Awamutu, NZ played three games against Australia.

During the second week of the July school holidays Wiremu Taka 12D9, Jahi Onkoba 11J11 and Jesse Lindsay 11B13 helped secure Howick Pakuranga U18 Mens team a NATIONAL TITLE in Christchurch. In a thrilling final, HPNC beat reigning champions Waitakere by an impressive nine goals.

A huge congratulations to the boys, it’s great to see netball continuing to grow into a sport that everybody can enjoy

Badminton

On Thursday 6 August, players from the Premier and Open A Badminton Teams had the opportunity to represent BDSC at the Senior Badminton Auckland Champs over at Auckland Badminton Association. This competition took place over a day, giving us the chance to compete against a variety of strong teams from different schools.

Although it was a short event, it was a great chance for us to experience a different level of competition and meet new people. Throughout the day, the team showed great effort, determination, and resilience as we supported one another and stayed positive through every match. We faced some tough opponents and were able to learn from each game, identifying areas where we could improve while gaining more on court experience.

Although we unfortunately didn’t make it to the semi-finals, the competition was still an exciting day as it gave us the opportunity to test our skills against new teams. Overall, it was an enjoyable and memorable day representing the school and competing alongside our teammates. We are proud of the effort everyone put in throughout the event and grateful for the opportunity to play, meet new people, and gain experience that we can carry into future competitions.

On Tuesday 11 August, six of our Year 9 and 10 players competed at the College Sport Junior Individuals and Doubles Championships, representing BDSC with determination and enthusiasm.

The team consisted of Leo Chen 9E8, Brian Wang 9E8, Cuthbert Cheng 9B7, Emily Bai 10K6, Luna Yin 10K12, and Tyler Dreaver 10K6. Throughout the tournament, the students competed in both singles and doubles events against strong junior badminton players from schools across Auckland.

A standout performance in the Junior Boys Singles came from Cuthbert Cheng, and Tyler Dreaver, who reached the semi-final and final with Tyler finishing second overall. Leo Chen and Brian Wang also had an impressive tournament, reaching the semi-finals of the Junior Boys Doubles.

The tournament provided a valuable opportunity for all six BDSC students to gain experience competing at a high level and representing their school. Their results reflect the hard work and commitment they have put into badminton throughout the year.

A special thank you goes to Mr Yu, who coached and managed the team throughout the season, and Mr McLennan, who also supported the students as a manager. Their guidance and encouragement helped the players perform at their best.

Congratulations to all six students on their achievements.

Underwater Hockey

Maddison Kitching 9D9 competed in the Howick/Botany Junior Underwater Hockey team. The team had an outstanding season. They finished with silver medals after an overtime loss in the final. The team are competing at the NZSS tournament during winter tournament week. We hope to have many more Botany students join Maddison next year.

Basketball

On Monday 17 August, the Basketball U17A Girls team competed in the Greater Auckland Basketball Tournament at Bruce Pulman Arena. The girls put on an outstanding display throughout the tournament, remaining unbeaten in pool play and showcasing excellent teamwork and skill against strong oppositions.

Their impressive performances earned them a place in the Championship Final against Marist College. The team fought hard in a closely contested match and, after a fantastic day of basketball, finished as tournament runners-up, placing 2nd overall.

Congratulations to all the following players, Riane Barnard 10B1, Elva Cai 11B13, Mykaila Diaz 11K12, Ewen Huang 12D9, Mele Manuatu 13K12, Bella Perumal 11B13, Jana Riba Corral 10S4, Nie Thai 12S16, Precious Mary Villaflores 11J5, Ruby Zeng 11B13 and Coach Jun Gamiao on an excellent achievement. The team represented BDSC with great pride and should be proud of their efforts and success at the tournament.

Cross Country

The 2026 New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships brought together the strongest young distance runners from across the country, with more than 1000 athletes competing across age groups in challenging, demanding conditions in Wellington on June 20th.

Olivia Stone 9K12 produced an outstanding performance lining up at the Year 9 Girls race with 100 of the best distance athletes in NZ. Olivia ran a composed and courageous race through water streams and hurdles to finish 5th overall, securing a place among the Top 5 Year 9 girls in the country. She ran a 11:30 minute time for 3000mtrs.

Kade McLoughlan 11D9 competed strongly in the Senior Boys U20 6000mtrs race, finishing 96th out of 193 runners, he was 31st in the U17 category. It was a determined last run of the day, which made for very challenging conditions, contending with 90km gusts and plenty of mud and water.

Both Kade and Olivia demonstrated resilience, discipline and outstanding sportsmanship on a national stage. They represented ĢƵ School College with pride on the day.

Karting

The BDSC Karting team entered the Auckland Schools Karting Championships on Monday 22 June. Two students Tareeq Damonze 9K12 and Jeff Lee 12B1 represented BDSC at this event. Jeff finished in 5th place on the podium with a trophy.

In the College Team standings, BDSC placed 2nd overall. Jeff also set the new track record at the New Sir Colin Giltrap Raceway in the 125cc Rotax Max Heavy class with a lap time of 53.425 seconds.

The annual championship attracted strong fields across multiple classes with school pride on the line as competitors battled. There was plenty of close racing throughout the day, with exciting wheel-to-wheel action highlighting the depth of young talent coming through the sport.

Gymsports

On Thursday 11 June, 14 students went to Bruce Pulman Park to compete at the annual College Sport Gymsports Championships. With our teams showing outstanding skill, teamwork and resilience, competitors took part in events such as tumbling, rhythmic and artistic.

Our competitors came away with big successes, with Jennifer Lister 9K12 earning gold in Level 8 Rhythmic, Anabelle Warner 10E8 gaining bronze in A Grade Tumbling and Annabelle Peacock 11J5 gaining bronze in Novice Artistic.

Our A Grade Botany team also took away bronze in tumbling consisting of Addyson Burke 10B1, Anabelle Warner 10E8 and Maddy Kong 10B1.

Our novice team took away Gold with the team consisting of Alpha Shi 12J5, Annabelle Peacock 11J5, Olivia Stone 9K12 and Daphne Zhang 9D9.

Overall the event was a huge success and a huge congratulations to all students who represented the college.

Duathlon

On Tuesday 23 June, we took nine students to the Duathlon Championships held at Pukekohe Park. It was an awesome day of competition, teamwork and determination, with all our students representing BDSC with pride. Every competitor gave their best effort, worked incredibly hard and demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship throughout the event.

We entered two teams and five individual competitors, and our students achieved some incredible results against strong competition from across the region.

Individual Results

  • Olivia Stone 9K12: 4th place, Junior Girls Individual
  • Kade McLoughlan 11D9: 3rd place, Intermediate Boys Individual
  • Allen Peng 11D9: 3rd place, Intermediate Boys Individual (Open Bike)

Team Results

  • Isaac Chen 11D9 and Lucas Chen 11D3: 3rd place, Intermediate Boys Team (Open Bike)
  • Matthew Ng 13E2 and Luke Lin 13B7: 1st place, Senior Boys Team (Open Bike)

These fantastic results are a testament to the commitment and hard work our students have put into their training. We are extremely proud of how they conducted themselves, and the way they supported each another throughout the competition.

Ultimate Frisbee

On Sunday 14 June, BDSC proudly took three teams to compete at the Ultimate Indoor Opens Tournament, with all teams representing the school with great skill, sportsmanship, and enthusiasm.

The Boys A Team had an outstanding day, progressing all the way to the semi-finals before finishing 4th overall, the highest placing BDSC has ever achieved at this tournament. The boys gave 100% effort throughout the day and should be incredibly proud of their achievement.

The Boys B Team enjoyed several close matches, secured some great wins, and gained valuable experience, finishing 14th out of 22 teams. Most importantly, they played with smiles on their faces and had plenty of fun throughout the tournament.

The Girls Team also had a fantastic day, recording several impressive wins and showcasing great teamwork and spirit. Their final game was an enjoyable all-Botany matchup against the Boys B Team.

Overall, it was a brilliant day of Ultimate Frisbee, with all three teams demonstrating determination, teamwork, and excellent sportsmanship. Congratulations to everyone involved on a memorable tournament.

Squash

ĢƵ College was well represented by two boys’ squash teams at the annual College Sport Squash Team Championship. The teams of five travelled to North Shore Squash Club on Tuesday 16 to Wednesday 17 June, competing against some of Auckland’s strongest secondary school programmes.

Despite facing tough opposition throughout the tournament, the boys showed determination, sportsmanship, and resilience across all matches. While they were unable to secure placings this year, the experience gained against high-calibre competition will prove valuable for future seasons. Their commitment and effort were commendable, and they represented the college with pride.

Orienteering

Five BDSC students set off early on Sunday 14 June for the Auckland Secondary Schools Rogaine Championships, held near the Muriwai Surf Club, under cold and foggy conditions that persisted for much of the journey. Fortunately, the weather improved significantly prior to the event briefing, with the fog lifting and the sun emerging to create more favourable conditions.

Following the briefing, competitors were issued with maps and, while separated from coaches and parents, carefully planned and marked their chosen routes. Participants were then guided to the edge of the bush for a mass start.

For several students, including Brian Yu 13B7, Roy Kim 13S10, and Olivia Stone 09K12, this event marked their first experience with Rogaine Orienteering. Despite the added challenge of losing her map early in the course, Olivia demonstrated commendable resilience and navigational awareness, successfully locating checkpoints and returning within the 90-minute time limit.

Miren Patel 11S4 and Kade McLoughlan 11D9 finished beyond the allotted time, resulting in a deduction of 20 points per minute late. However, Kade’s strong performance earlier in the race proved decisive, as he collected the highest number of checkpoints in his grade. Even after penalties were applied, he achieved an impressive third place finish.

Although a few participants experienced minor cuts from the dense cutty grass, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved, offering both challenge and achievement in a supportive and competitive environment.

Netball

The netball season is now halfway through and the first round of matches have been completed. Congratulations to the following teams, players and coaches, who have all finished top of their section and will be promoted to the section/grade above after the holidays.

Rugby 1st XV Win in 1A Competition

After a successful 15 years of 1st XV Rugby (winning three 1B Titles 2017, 2019 and 2023) the team won promotion to the 1A Competition in 2024. A competition with well established schools. The team has been battling away eleven weeks of the season for two years without a win.

On Saturday 6 June, the team had their First Win in the 1A competition away against Liston College. The final score was 26-24. The team, coaches and the BDSC Rugby Village took a lot of belief away from the game not just the four points on the table.

Our 2026 1st XV have three home games to go.

The BDSC Rugby Programme would also like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of Mr Alan Taylor. Over 22 years, he established and led rugby at BDSC with passion, integrity, and unwavering dedication. His influence extended beyond the school, making a significant contribution to the development of secondary schools rugby across Auckland. In recognition of his service to the game, Mr Taylor was inducted as a Life Member of the Auckland Secondary Schools Rugby Union in 2025.

As Mr Taylor begins his retirement, we extend our sincere thanks and very best wishes. His vision, commitment, and leadership have helped shape BDSC Rugby into the programme it is today. Generations of young people have benefited from his guidance, encouragement, and passion for rugby. His legacy will continue to inspire players, coaches, and the wider BDSC community for many years to come.

Rock Climbing

Our second event in the Rock Climbing Bouldering Series was a fantastic success, with students showing great enthusiasm and perseverance throughout the day. The event provided a fun and supportive environment where participants were able to challenge themselves on a variety of climbs while developing their skills and confidence.

In terms of results, Olivia Stone 9K12 performed strongly, finishing in 24th place, while Olivia Meng 10S10 placed 45th in a competitive field of 52 climbers.

We look forward to the next event in the series and continuing to build on this positive momentum.

Volleyball Referee Course

Thirteen BDSC students completed their Level 1 – Local Referee Qualification in May. The students were lead by Masha Zamani with support from BDSC volleyball partner Unite Volleyball Club.

The students will now practice their officiating skills in the college sport competitions and prepare for the Level 2 – Regional Referee Qualification.

Swimming

Kiri Yamagami 12J5 recently competed at the Oceania Swimming Championships in Suva, Fiji. Kiri had an amazing experience at her first event representing New Zealand. She won three relay medals. 4×100 Freestyle Women’s GOLD, 4×100 Medley Women’s SILVER and 4×200 Freestyle Women’s BRONZE. Kiri also qualified for the final in 100m Butterfly.

She has now been selected in the NZ Team for the upcoming Tri Series – NZ v Victoria v Western Australia.

We are so proud of her achievements representing NZ as a 17-year-old, competing in the open level against the best swimmers in Oceania.

Swimming Counties Manukau Zone Champs

On Wednesday 20 May, 15 BDSC students travelled to the Manurewa Aquatic Centre to compete in the Counties Manukau Swimming Championships, achieving great overall results across all categories.

I loved how we got to hang out with friends and cheer each other on as we swam. Throughout the event, team spirit stayed incredibly high, with every single athlete pushing past their limits and giving 100% in their heats. My absolute personal highlight of the day was smashing my previous record to set a new PB in the freestyle event.

Even though we went up against some highly experienced swimmers, our squad kept their heads held high and never lost confidence. Ultimately, it was a wildly successful day filled with fun, growth, and memorable team bonding.

To cap off a fantastic meet, 10 of our students have qualified for the Auckland Champion of Champions event on Sunday, 7 June across multiple events – an outstanding achievement for the team.

Squash Team Champs

From Tuesday 5 May to Thursday 7 May, 12 of our squash players attended the Individual Championships at the North Shore Squash Club. It was an exciting few days filled with intense matches, strong competition, and plenty of team spirit.

The event provided a valuable experience for all involved, with our students competing against players from Macleans College, Long Bay College, and many other schools. Alongside the enjoyment of the tournament, Botany achieved some excellent results, with several players finishing in the top three across multiple divisions. A special mention to Luke Lin 13B7 for winning bronze in Division 1.

Overall, it was a fantastic learning experience, and we are looking forward to the next event later in the term.

Auckland Cross Country Champs

On Tuesday 26 May, 37 BDSC students competed in the College Sport Auckland Cross Country Championships, enjoying an awesome day of racing and team spirit.

A standout performance came from Olivia Stone 9K12, who claimed victory in the Junior Girls race with an incredible sprint finish, crossing the line less than a second ahead of her competitor – an outstanding achievement.

Another notable result was Kade McLoughlan 11D9, who placed an impressive 10th in his race, showing great determination and effort.

Her dedication, resilience, and competitive spirit were on full display, and we are incredibly proud of what she has achieved at this level!Hugecongratulations Olivia!

Alumnus Noah Retford (graduated 2024)is just finishing hisfreshmanyear at Northwood University in Michigan, USA, on a track and field scholarship for hurdles. He is studying a business degree with a major in automotive aftermarket and management. Given that his two passions are athletics/hurdles and cars, Noah has an amazing opportunity to be in one of the best college hurdles teams in the USA and study what he loves.He also survived his first bitterly cold Michigan winter with temperatures dropping as low as -27 degrees some days!

In his first indoor track season, Noah broke the AucklandMen’s60m hurdles record and has the lead time in New Zealand for 2026. He entered the Northwood University record books with top ten fastest times for both 60m hurdles and 400m hurdles in hisfreshmanyear.

It is great to see our past students excelling in their passion.

Swimming

Congratulations toKiri Yamagami 12J5in herselectionfortheNew ZealandSwimmingTeamto compete at theOceania Championships, being held in Suva, Fijifrom 9-12 May.The Oceania Swimming Championships is a key regional event, bringing together swimmers from across the Pacific. As the regional championships for World Aquatics, the competition is open to 15 member federations and provides developingswimmers with the opportunity to gain international racing exposure, refine their skills, and compete for medals in a multi-nation environment.

Unfortunately, our annual Sports Awards had to be scaled down a little this year, due to lack of facilities. However, it was still very important to us to celebrate and acknowledge those who have excelled in their sporting endeavours this year. The night was attended by award winners and their families, plus the coaches from our top teams. It was a great night and we would like to extend a huge congratulations to all our winners on the night.

On Wednesday 25 October we held our annual Sport Awards Evening. As usual, it was a great night, with tickets all selling out! We celebrated the sporting year that was, announced MVP’s for our major codes, acknowledged our NZ Reps and our major trophies were awarded at the end of the night.

Huge thanks to the BDSC Kapa Haka group who opened our evening, with their beautiful waiata. It was a great way to get the night started.

Dave Letele (aka Brown Buttabean, former NRL player and Boxer) was our amazing guest speaker, who engaged with the audience and delivered a strong message around building resilience. He got us on our feet, encouraging audience participation while getting his point through to both students and adults alike.

A quick game of “Minute to Win it” got the crowd going again. Thanks to our contestants, Miss Byrne, Craig Besley, Jono Upoko and Nicky Maera who were “randomly” selected to participate and gave it their best…they weren’t competitive at all!!!!

On the 27 October we held our Sports Awards evening. Not held for two years due to Covid restrictions, it was great to have it back on the calendar. It was a great night, with guest speaker Kirsten Fisher-Marsters (ex BDSC student and Cook Island Swimmer) giving a very relatable speech to our up and coming sports students. Tama-Aru (Cook Island Dance Group) were there providing the entertainment and put on an amazing show.

A huge congratulations to our alumni students Tone Ng Shui (NZ Sevens) and Kirsten Fisher-Marsters (Cook Island Swimming) who became our 2nd and 3rd ex-BDSC students to become Olympians. They follow in the footsteps of Merissa Gibbens (nee Smith) who represented NZ in Football in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Kirsten was one of the proud flag bearers for the Cook Islands at the opening ceremony and set a personal best and a new Cook Island record in the 100m Breaststroke. Then, as many of you will be aware, the NZ Mens Sevens team came home with silver medals, making Tone our first ever medallist at an Olympic Games. We are all very proud of their achievements on the world stage.
